Bakersfield Trailblazers Training Course
Last Sunday we took a drive in the Jeep Wrangler to the Glennville California area for a day of fun. This was our first outing with the Bakersfield TrailBlazers, a local Family 4 Wheel Drive Club and we were pretty excited to go. The drive was beautiful! We started out around 8:00 AM Sunday and drove towards Glennville.
The scenery started out pretty stark, not much in the way of houses or buildings or trees, mostly sandy and flat with a hill here and there. The views of the mountains in the foreground were quite a sight to see, and easy to view since we took the full top off our Jeep. The fact that the twisting turning road brought our speed down to 30 Miles Per Hour in many spots was also good for taking in the view.
As we continued winding our way upward the panorama behind us became quite a sight worth stopping to see!
Finally upon arriving in Glennville we checked on the upcoming Rodeo Parade schedule they were staging up for in town. Then we drove out of town to scope out Randy's house where the 'event' was scheduled to take place. It was a little over 3 miles to Randy's and the day was still quite young, so we turned around, drove back into Glennville and positioned ourselves on the side of the Main Drag for parade viewing.
We waited about an hour and 15 minutes for the 30 minute parade. It was fun to watch the small town rally around their Local Celebrities, Law Enforcment and Business Owners. We even got to see some of the past Glennville Rodeo Queens including the very first to this years Glennville Rodeo Queen. Mom Dad and the entire family sure were proud!
We enjoyed the sun, the people and the parade, but it was time to get out to our group. We had no idea what awaited us up at Randy's house!
Scattered about in Randy's front yard over fifteen 4Wheelers had assembled in various locations from the beginning of the driveway all the way up to his house. In the meadow was sort of a staging area where Jeeps were circling. We saw a Cherokee climbing over a smaller, but still treacherous clump of rocks two thirds of the way up to the house and at the top there was the most awesome rock slide.
In actuality, Randy's front yard looks like the perfect training spot for 4 Wheelers...no, for practice taking your Jeep over the Rublicon! There were lots of people in and around 4Wheelers, standing, sitting in lawn chairs and kids too! The kids were flying around on little 4 Wheelers racing up and down and around us like maniacs and were even spotted taking a spill or two themselves! In total, it was a fun and refreshing sight to behold.
The Main Attraction
The main attraction (as seen in the picture above)was the steepest, rockiest boulder slope of them all, just below the house and at the top of the driveway. As you can see in the picture the top-most rock slide (we think it's man-made) is a pretty challenging climb for any 4 Wheel enthusiast. Just getting to the bottom if this doozy is a challenge ittself!
Since we fondly refer to our Wrangler as a "Whimpy Jeep designed for Desert and Beach Sand" we declined the challenge of this rock slide. Our fun was mostly watching the several rock climb areas and the brave guys who tried to scale them. It was nice to see the team effert as a few enthusiasts made the attempts up...and over these obstacles! With the careful guidance of seasoned professionals each worried their way up the rock piles and slide.
There were times when there were people actually underneath moving rocks around so the driver could get better traction and not be stuck. Of course you could hear "ooh's" and "aah's" in the crowd above, beside and below. These "ooh's" and "aah's" were replaced by groans when the lady next to us heard something break in the Cherokee her husband was attempting to get up the Big Slide. The good thing was to know that if anything went wrong there was lots of help there and a winch could be used to help get the 4Wheeler the rest of the way up.
It was a really fun time and we'd like to say Thanks Randy and Family, and thank-you to the Bakersfield Trailblazers for a lot of good times yet to come!
